September Start and Badge Outline...

We are delighted that the easing of Covid restrictions means we can go ahead with planning a September start. We hope that all children and young people will take part in the Moray Badge and anticipate those who have suffered isolation, increased anxiety or a reduction in their wellbeing during lengthy lockdowns or those finding the return to school difficult, will be encouraged to engage in some of these new experiences outdoors and gain new interests and skills for their future. These activities are aimed to boost pupils’ wellbeing, help them regain their life balance, increase morale and self-confidence and of course, have Loads of Fun!

The project is open to all children and young people aged 5-18 who come under the Moray Council Education Department in Moray and Banff, and there will be arrangements for Home Schooled pupils too. Unless the restrictions change, we plan to start the project on Monday 20 September.

The three badges are age-related: Platinum for ages 12-18 (S1-6), Copper for ages 9-12 (P5-7) and Brass for ages 5-9 (P1-5) and each badge will have three levels. Pupils will start on Level 1, completing activities to earn points for that level before moving on to the next level. Each level will have a range of free activities to choose from; badges can be completed entirely by undertaking activities with no costs involved. Some sponsorship will be available to help with costs for those activities which have a charge for equipment or tuition in Levels 2 and 3.

We are working with ActiveSchools who are very enthusiastic about the project and will be organising several activities with groups which earn points towards the badges. We are also in contact with many local outdoor organisations to discuss partnerships for providing activities across the region. These will be publicised on our website with a link so parents can book directly for each organisation’s activity. Further details will go out to schools on Friday 17 September with a downloadable Pupil Registration Form explaining how to sign up their pupils and a downloadable Activities Points Record sheet indicating the options which count towards each badge level for pupils to record their activities.

Badges will be presented at a ceremony to mark the Platinum Jubilee in late May or early June 2022 and individual certificates showing the level each pupil has achieved will be sent out to schools before the end of the summer term.
